Alfred John Dobson

ZANESVILLE - Alfred John Dobson, 92, of Zanesville, formerly of Wellsville, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018, at Clay Garden Place in Zanesville.

He was born August 18, 1926, in Stratton, the son of the late James and Beatrice (Dunlap) Dobson. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death on June 30, 2005, by his wife, Ilene (Fitzgerald) Dobson, whom he married November 13, 1955; two sisters: Nadine Dobson Leatherberry and Linda Dobson; and two brothers: William and Conrad Dobson.

John graduated from Jefferson Union High School in 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served on a ship in the Pacific Ocean as an electrician's mate third class. He was employed in the rigging department for Weirton Steel Company until his retirment.

John was very active in Masonry, holding many memberships and achieving highest honors. He served as Worshipful Master in Blue Lodge Toronto Lodge #583; Excellent High Priest, Order of High Priesthood and Grand Chapter Distinguished Service Award in the Royal Arch Wellsville Chapter #55; Illustrious Master, Order of the Silver Trowel, and Grand Chapter Distinguished Service Award in East Liverpool Keramos Council #95; Eminent Commander, Grand Commandery Meritorious Service Award in Commandery Pilgrim Commandery #55; Shannon Council and Killearney Council in Knight Masons of Ireland; Senior Warden in Blue Lodge Wellsville R&AM #180; Dad Advisor in George T. Wilson Chapter of DeMolay; and Worthy Patron and Honorary Life Member of Wellsville Chapter Eastern Star #417. John was also a member of Holyrood Conclave Red Cross of Constantine and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Steubenville. He received the Knight of the York Cross of Honor and the Lawrence T. Minnic Award, and he achieved 14th Degree, 32nd Degree, Soverign Prince, Cutler Council, Jefferson Consistory, 2nd Lieutenant Commander, Commander in Chief, and 33rd Degree Mason, which is the highest honor bestowed.

Survivors include one daughter, Beth Ann DaLonzo and her husband, Joe, of Gahanna, OH; one sister, Peggy Rose of Highlandtown; and one brother, Kenneth Dobson of Toronto. Also surviving are friends who became family, George and Sally Prince of Wellsville.

Masonic Services will be held at 5:00 pm Sunday, September 23, 2018, at the Roberts Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held immediately following with Pastor Mark Blakeley of the Wellsville First Christian Church officiating.

Friends may call from 2:00-5:00 pm on Sunday at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main Street in Wellsville.

Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
