Eugene Glen "Jeep" Montgomery

WELLSVILLE - Eugene Glen "Jeep" Montgomery, 86, of Wellsville, passed into eternal peace on Thursday, January 12, 2017, at his home following a lengthy illness with his wife, Shirley, at his side. Gene was a lifelong resident of Wellsville and was affectionately known by all as "Jeep".

He was born at home on May 5, 1930, in Wellsville, the youngest son of the late Charles Milton Montgomery, Jr. and Flora Belle (Stillwell) Montgomery. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Mae Montgomery, and his oldest brother, Charles Franklin "Brud" Montgomery.

Gene is survived by his wife of almost fifty years, Shirley Ann (Morton) Montgomery, whom he married August 19, 1967; one daughter, Cheryl Ellen Montgomery Roe and her husband, Gordon Roe; one grandson, Geordon Charles Roe; and one granddaughter, Olivia Ann Roe, all of Wellsville. Also surviving are three brothers: Donald (Betty) Montgomery of Wellsville, Herman (Lucille) Montgomery of Salem, and James (Loretta) Montgomery of East Liverpool.

Gene graduated from Wellsville High School in 1952. He retired from Homer Laughlin China Company and Ashland Oil. He was a member of the York Barbell Club and the Wellsville Boat Club in his younger years. His hobbies included weightlifting, gardening, and watching The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. Gene's grandchildren meant the world to him, and the entire family knew they could always depend on him. He was proud to have the river and Nevada Street in his heart. You could always find him waiting along the bank as the steamboats glided by. The calliope music always brought him to tears.

Gene and Shirley have been caretakers at Shoub Towers in Wellsville for the last twenty years. They wish to express their thanks for the years of support from the tenants, as well as their gratitude to the Wellsville Police and Fire Departments.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 17, 2017, at the Roberts Funeral Home with Pastor Duane Hetzer of Riverside Presbyterian Church officiating.

Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm Monday at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main Street in Wellsville.
