BEAVER FALLS, PA - Fred A. Wells, 62, of Beaver Falls, PA, formerly of Chester, WV, passed away Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy journey with heart disease.

He was born June 16, 1961, in East Liverpool, the son of the late Guy and Freda (Nally) Wells. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his sister Linda Wells, along with brothers Larry Wells and William Wells.

Fred graduated from Oak Glen High School in 1979 before serving his country in the United States Army.

After that, he took on all kinds of jobs throughout his life, including picking apples at an orchard, serving up food as a short-order cook, teaching Sunday School, and working as a security guard for FirstEnergy Bruce Mansfield Plant. His favorite gig, though, came most recently. He loved working as an associate at Roberts Funeral Home in Wellsville.

Fred had a big appreciation for life. Living with a chronic illness truly made him realize the little things are the big things. For Fred, that list included sitting outside, telling a sloooooow story, enjoying some ice cream (and eating in general!), and binge watching quality TV shows such as Barnwood Builders and the Great British Bake Off.

Survivors include the love of his life, Mary Hansen Wells; two sons: Joshua and Kyle Wells of Parkersburg, WV; Mary's three children: Amy (Joey) Morona of Strongsville, OH, Marc (Andra) Hansen of Center Township, PA, and Richie (Joyce) Hansen of Hanford, CA; sisters: Donna "Sis" Bailey of Newell, WV and Cathy Lynn Ferrebee of West Union, WV; and brothers: David Wells of New Philadelphia, OH, Neal Williams of Ravenna, OH, and Roger Fiest.

Between them, Fred and Mary shared eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He loved them all loudly and proudly.

Mary and Fred also cultivated a rich network of friends they loved spending time with, especially when cards were involved! That support also includes the special cardiac doctors and staff he spent time with over the past decade on the 11th floor of Allegheny General Hospital - true angels on Earth.

In mid-June, Fred made the decision to turn off his LVAD device after navigating an excruciating journey with heart disease over the past decade. There were good days and bad days - a true roller coaster.

But he sure lived up his last 24 hours! He ate a steak dinner, drank five beers, stayed up all night hanging out with his favorite nurses, went outside to take a big breath of fresh air, and enjoyed a big Frappuccino that morning.  He went peacefully, on his own terms, surrounded by a room of people who loved him. What a way to go!

It was a lesson in celebrating living and a lesson in embracing dying. Let his last day be a reminder of the importance of doing things your own way, too.

A memorial service to celebrate Fred's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 23, 2024, at the Midland American Legion Post 481, 800 Midland Ave., Midland, PA 15059.
