Gerald "Jerry" Sargent

WELLSVILLE – Gerald "Jerry" Sargent, 80, of Wellsville, passed away with his family and pastor at his side on Friday, October 24, 2014, at Allegheny General Hospital following surgery.

He was born February 16, 1934, in Parkersburg, WV, the son of the late Floyd E. and Delsie V. (Morris) Sargent.

Jerry graduated from Wellsville High School in 1952. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 where he was a Morse code operator while stationed in Germany. He was employed for thirty years as a roller in the Z mill for the former Crucible Steel Mill and for twelve years as a foreman for J&L, before retiring in 1994. Jerry was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in their many sports activities. He was a wonderful and caring husband and father, and friend and mentor to many others. Jerry loved the Lord and his church family at Covenant Presbyterian Church where he was a member.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene (Hartford) Sargent, whom he married December 25, 1954; one daughter: Cheryl Rodgers and her husband, Harry, of Wellsville; three sons: Michael Sargent and his wife, Kendra, of Indianapolis, IN, Larry Sargent and his wife, Chris, of Erie, PA, and Jim Sargent and his wife, Tracy, of Fort Worth, TX; and Bruce Whittaker of Wellsville, who was like a son to Jerry. Also surviving are ten grandchildren: Steve, Julie, Frances, Christopher, Emily, Tyler, Brittany, Seth, Macaela, and Emily; and three great-grandchildren: Chase, Gianna, and Audry, as well as one brother-in-law: William Board.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother-in-law: Delorse and Jack Pitts and Mary Board.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, October 28, 2014, at the Roberts Funeral Home with Pastor Samuel Monte of the church officiating. The Tri-State Burial Group will accord full military honors.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Monday at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main Street in Wellsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Jerry's name to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 405 18th Street, Wellsville, OH 43968.
