WELLSVILLE - Glenn Herbert Downing, 89, of Wellsville, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at Country Club Manor in Steubenville.

He was born January 22, 1935, in Kijabe, Kenya, East Africa, the son of the late Herbert C. and Mildred (Houk) Downing. In addition to his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by one grandson, Peter Daniel Chamberlain, one sister, Gayle Grass, and one son-in-law, Scott Malcolm.

Glenn lived a fascinating life. Having been a son of missionary parents, he graduated from Rift Valley Academy in Kijabe, Kenya. He proudly served his country as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corp. Beginning in 1968, he was employed as a pilot for Mohawks Airline, Allegheny Airlines, US Airways, and American Airlines before retiring in 1995. Glenn then worked as a flight simulator instructor. He was known for his ability to make something out of anything, owned every tool imaginable, and especially enjoyed woodworking. Glenn was an avid weightlifter and lived an active lifestyle. He hitchhiked around the world several times, was a history buff, and he was an avid reader and a fan of author Louie L'Amour. Glenn also authored his own book titled "Global Warring in the Land of Zing". Music was a big part of Glenn's life and a source of comfort for him. He learned to sing at the age of two and became a trained vocalist, learned to play violin at the age of ten and played in his father's orchestra when he was in high school, and was a soloist in the Naval Cadet choir. Glenn loved to sing for the Lord, and he sang in and led many men's choirs throughout the years. He attended the Wellsville First Christian Church. Glenn loved the Lord and was an encourager and prayer warrior, always offering up the words "God's on the case". He also wanted people to know and remember that Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and we are called to listen to and obey the voice of God.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma "Tweet" (Teuscher) Downing, whom he married August 31, 1963; three children: Ann (Thomas) Chamberlain of Wellsville, Virginia "Ginger" Malcolm of East Liverpool, and Jonathan (Jennifer) Downing of Dayton; and three siblings: Edwin Downing of Oshkosh, WI, Ruth Ann Miano of Oklahoma City, OK and Martin Downing of Concord, NC. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Jonathan Malcolm, Caleb Malcolm, Matthew Chamberlain, Timothy Chamberlain, Katrina Brothers, Natalie Downing, Nathaniel Downing, Aidan Downing, and Ava Downing; and three great-grandchildren: Felicity Malcolm and Carter and Ivy Brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Wellsville First Christian Church, 831 Main Street in Wellsville. Family and friends may call two hours prior to the service at the church. The Tri-State Burial Group will accord full military honors at 11:00 am.
