James G. Smith, Jr.

WELLSVILLE - James G. Smith, Jr., 69, of Wellsville, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born September 19, 1942, in East Liverpool, the son of Edda (Zeurley) and William Thompkins of Etowah, Tennessee, and the late James G. Smith, Sr.

Jim was a truck driver and, along with his wife, owned and operated J & S Pizza Shop in Wellsville. He also served as Mayor of Irondale for four years, was on village council for eighteen years, and was a fireman for Irondale. Jim also was a track coach for the former Stanton Local High School. After retirement, he served as caretaker for Hammond Park in Wellsville for several years.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah (McCullough) Smith, whom he married February 14, 1965; one daughter: Paula Byerly and her husband Garry of Troy, OH; two sons: James C. Smith and his wife Jamie of East Liverpool, and Jason S. Smith and his wife Jaime of Wellsville; and one brother: John Varner and his wife Dawn of Etowah, TN. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren: Ashley Lombardozzi, Ayla (Eddie) Gorby, Nunzio Lombardozzi, Kaylee Smith, Avery Smith, Preston Smith, Jessey Smith, Kristen Smith, Alex Smith, Leah Smith, Sarah Smith, Annabelle Smith, and Max Smith; and three great-grandchildren: Tyler Gorby, Emma Gorby, and Zury Gorby.

In addition to his father, Jim was preceded in death by his sister Connie Springer.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the Roberts Funeral Home with Pastor Don Monaco of Grace Hospice officiating.

Burial will follow in Yellow Creek Cemetery.

Friends may call on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631 Main Street in Wellsville.
