Mary Ellen (Maze) Montgomery

EAST LIVERPOOL - Mary Ellen (Maze) Montgomery, 77, of East Liverpool, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2014, surrounded by her loving children at Kindred Hospital in Beaver, PA.

She was born October 14, 1936, in Fairmont, WV, the daughter of the late Herbert L. and Mary Ellen (Sloan) Maze.

She was preceded in death on June 2, 2007, by her husband, Kenneth J. "Red" Montgomery, whom she married March 9, 1956.

Mary Ellen graduated from Wellsville High School in 1954. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Kent State University and her Master's Degree in curriculum from Youngstown State University. She previously had been employed as a school bus driver, and she retired in 2000 from the East Liverpool School District where she was a teacher for thirty-three years. Mary Ellen founded the D.A.R.E. program at Westgate and LaCroft Elementary Schools. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday School and drove the church bus. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She will be greatly missed as the matriarch of her family.

Survivors include one daughter: Amy E. Lacey and her husband, Thomas, of East Liverpool; two sons: Kenneth L. Montgomery of Wellsville, and Charles L. Montgomery and his wife, Victoria, of East Liverpool; two sisters: Marlene French and her husband, Babe, and April Beadnell; and three brothers: Rhett B. Maze, Ralph Maze, and Roland Maze and his wife, Julie. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Carly and Kendra Lacey, Joshua Newlen, and Danielle Ensinger and her husband, Brett; and two great-grandchildren: Dougie and Ali. She was the favorite aunt to the many nieces and nephews who also survive. Mary Ellen will be sadly missed by her two dogs: Carleeta and Kiki, and Hope the cat.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Ellen was preceded in death by two infant brothers: Courtney Allen Maze and Herbert Lincoln Maze, Jr.; her sister-in-law: Naomi Bussard; and two nieces: Rachel Beadnell and Candy Steele.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, July 21, 2014, at the Roberts Funeral Home with Pastor Merle Williams of First Church of the Nazarene in East Liverpool and Pastor Don MacNeil of Church of the Nazarene in New Brighton, PA. officiating.

Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm Sunday at the Roberts Funeral Home, 631Main Street in Wellsville. Family will gather at the funeral home from 6:00-8:00 pm on Saturday.
